Our journey & legacy
Over 50 years of pioneering research, from forensic discovery to a global movement in play science.
-
1960s – 1970s: The Discovery
Dr. Stuart Brown’s investigation into the Texas Tower shooting revealed a startling link between severe play deprivation and violent behavior. This sparked a lifelong quest to understand play as a biological necessity, eventually leading to collaborative research with Dr. Jane Goodall on animal play patterns.
-
1980s – 1990s: National Recognition
The research gained global attention through a 1994 National Geographic cover story, "Animals at Play." As public interest surged, Dr. Brown founded the Institute to formalize the study of creative adaptability and healthy play behaviors.
-
2000s: Building the Science
NIFPlay catalyzed the field by organizing the "State of Play Science Summit" at Stanford and producing the PBS documentary The Promise of Play. In 2009, Dr. Brown’s seminal book, Play, was published, now translated into 12 languages.
-
2010 – Present: The Future of Play
Today, the Institute continues to bridge the gap between neuroscience and daily life. We are currently developing new digital initiatives to help individuals and families embrace their unique "play nature" for healthier, more fulfilling lives.
