Anthony D. Pellegrini, PhD

A. D. Pellegrini has devoted his career to defining play with precision — distinguishing it from gamified instruction and other adult-directed activities — and to documenting the unique value of recess and unstructured peer play for children's social development, learning, and engagement. He has published more than 20 books, nearly 100 book chapters, and hundreds of journal articles on play, recess, and language development. Professor emeritus of educational psychology at the University of Minnesota, his recess research in particular has influenced school policy debates about unstructured play time.
