Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, Louk Vanderschuren is one of the world's leading researchers on the neurobiology of social play behavior. Building on the foundations laid by Jaak Panksepp, he has produced a rich body of work mapping the brain systems — opioids, dopamine, endocannabinoids, and serotonin — that drive the motivation to engage in social play in rats. His research has demonstrated that drugs of abuse, early-life stress, and neuropsychiatric conditions profoundly alter play motivation, providing a window into the neural basis of social reward deficits seen in conditions like ADHD, autism, and schizophrenia. He has also contributed to understanding the long-term consequences of play deprivation for social development.
