Joe Frost dedicated his academic career to creating and advocating for safe, developmentally appropriate play environments for children of all ages and abilities. He directed the University of Texas at Austin's Play and Playgrounds Research Programme for nearly 40 years and wrote or co-wrote more than 20 books and many academic articles. He consulted for the US Departments of Education and Justice, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and numerous public organisations. His collection of more than 500 play-related publications is housed in the Joe L. Frost Children's Play and Play Environments Research Collection at the University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio.
